Environmental Justice was at the heart of the discussions of ‘Laudato Si’ published in 2015 by Antonio Spadaro and Pope Francis I. Beyond pollution, the phenomenon of gentrification in industrialized urban centres defines social injustice experienced in our world today. Communities at the fringes suffer from the paradox of poverty amidst riches, mostly displaced from their resources. Their members remain vulnerable to ailments caused by exposure to toxic wastes, and are precluded from decent living due to environmental degradation. Caring for populations who suffer from hazards resulting from industrial pollution, advocating for fair compensation for artisans within the extractive industry; and legislating on environmental friendly industrial operations are useful means to support environmental justice.
